ACIL PhD Researcher Roman Teshome wins Human Rights Essay Award 2021

The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Washington College of Law that seeks to stimulate the production of scholarly work in international human rights law. Almost a 100 essays were entered and Roman won the award for best essay written in English.
The winning article is entitled "Derogations to Human Rights During a Global Pandemic: Unpacking Normative and Practical Challenges".
“In an effort to navigate the uncharted waters a global pandemic of this level of severity creates, states have taken emergency measures that have effectively altered life as we know it. These emergency measures have also highlighted the pre-existing and emerging normative gaps and practical challenges in international human rights law with regard to derogations. Roman joined ACIL in September 2018 and is currently carrying out research on the perils of development-induced displacement from the perspective of international human rights law, particularly focusing on the context of Africa.
Since 2003, the academy has presented the Annual Human Rights Essay Award to encourage and recognize academic work in international human rights law. This year they received over 97 essays in English and Spanish.
Winners receive a full scholarship to the Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.
