The NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, the War Studies Research Centre of the Netherlands Defence Academy and the Amsterdam Center for International Law are organising an international conference on the law applicable to the use of biometrics by armed forces.

This is a direct follow-up to the first workshop on the same topic held in Amsterdam on 25th May 2023.

The conference will feature high-level panel discussions on a range of topics, including:

  • (Autonomous) Weapons systems and biometrics under the Law of Armed Conflict;
  • The convergence of biometrics and artificial intelligence in the military domain;
  • Biometric data and targeting operations; and,
  • European law implications for the use of biometric data by the armed forces.

The conference will also include briefs and expert presentations about:

  • Battlefield evidence;
  • Best practices from biometric exercises; and,
  • Research projects concerning aspects of military data protection.

The conference will take place from 7th – 8th of May 2024 in Tallinn, Estonia, at the Cyber Range CR14 (Rävala pst 14, 10141 Tallinn). Whilst the format will be in-person, remote attendance will also be possible. A (non-hosted) social/networking event will take place on the evening of the 7th of May 2024. There is no conference fee.
