In February 2021, E&U For The Climate, ASA International law and EU-reka Study Association for European Law organised an essay competition on law and the environment. They invited submissions exploring how environmental protection is located across different legal fields.

Dorothy Puga, an LL.M. student of Public International Law at the University of Amsterdam, won the competition with her paper ‘Extinguishing the Flares of Death: How the Escazú Agreement May Enhance Rights Protection and Access to Justice’. Dorothy is a Hungarian-Ecuadorian LLM candidate (Public International Law) at the University of Amsterdam interested in the intersectionality between human rights, environmental challenges and corporate accountability. She wishes to further explore topics of environmental justice with the hope of contributing to a
greener and fairer world for present and future generations.
