Machiko Kanetake is Professor of International Law and Security Governance at the University of Amsterdam, and the Academic Director and the Chair of the Executive Board of the T.M.C. Asser Instituut. Before joining UvA, she was the programme director (2023-2025) and coordinator (2015-2021) of the Master's Programme in Public International Law at Utrecht University. Since September 2024, she is a Board member of the European Society of International Law (ESIL). She served in 2017-2024 as an Editorial Board member of the Leiden Journal of International Law, one of the top journals of the field.
Through her award-winning publications, project leadership, and competitive professional appointments, she has built considerable academic expertise in international law in the interactive domains of security, human rights, and technologies. She has also developed original research on the interactions between national and international law, particularly before domestic courts and international courts and tribunals. Machiko welcomes supervision enquiries from prospective doctoral candidates in any of her research areas.
The T.M.C. Asser Institute is an internationally renowned research institute in The Hague, affiliated with UvA, in the fields of public international law, private international law and European law. Since July 2025, Machiko Kanetake serves as the academic director of the Institute.
The Asser Institute is an academic research institution with a special responsibility rooted in The Hague's unique position as the International City of Peace and Justice. This means that the Institute combines academic work with practice-oriented activities designed to facilitate policy engagemnet with interantional and European law. The Institute offers a range of training programmes - including tailor-made training programmes - for judges, regulators, and officers of international organisations, especially on international criminal law, counterterrorism, military AI, disarmament, business & human rights, and sports law.
